A half-day walk through downtown Canmore, with the Rockies always in the background. You get a bit of town history, a famous sculpture, a museum and a bridge over the Bow River, all a few blocks apart. No car needed, and it works for all ages.
The route
Start in Downtown Canmore, on Main Street (8 Street), with art galleries and a mountain-town feel. In season the street is for pedestrians and cyclists only: in 2026 it ran from May 11 to October 16, with no cars between 6 Avenue and 8 Avenue, according to the Town of Canmore.
Walk down Main Street to Policeman's Creek. That's where you'll find Big Head, the giant bronze head by artist Alan Henderson. It's inspired by the town's name, which comes from a Scottish town and is linked to the Gaelic words for "big head" or "chief". A couple of minutes is enough for the photo.
A few steps away, at 609 8 Street, is the NWMP Barracks, the North West Mounted Police post. Two officers built it in 1893 with logs and mud, and it's one of the oldest buildings in Canmore and a provincial historic site. Inside, it's kept as it was when the Clarke family lived there. Admission is by donation (10 dollars suggested) and the garden is always open. It's open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 16:30.
Head back toward 7 Avenue for the Canmore Museum, inside the Canmore Civic Centre. It tells the geological, Indigenous and cultural story of the Bow Valley. General admission is 10 Canadian dollars; it's free for children 12 and under and for Indigenous visitors. It keeps the same hours as the barracks.
Finish by walking west to the river. The Engine Bridge is an 1891 railway bridge that once carried coal trains; today you cross it on foot, with views of the Bow River and the mountains. If you watched HBO's The Last of Us, it may look familiar.
