A demanding climb to a 2050 m summit. The trail crosses an open slope for 2.2 km to Shuey Pass, switchbacks up to treeline, passes a white quartzite glacial erratic and finishes on a steep, stony path.
From the top you see across the foothills to the east, the Fiddle River valley, Utopia Mountain and the cliffs of Ashlar Ridge. Parks Canada warns the area is known for afternoon thunderstorms: start early.
Take Highway 16 44 km east of Jasper, then the narrow, winding 17 km Miette Road. Start at the Miette Hot Springs parking lot, on the paved path that climbs from the passenger drop-off loop. Miette Road closes to vehicles from mid-October to late May, and vehicles over 7.5 m are not allowed.
📍 Miette Hot Springs parking lot, Miette Road
Late May to mid-October, while Miette Road is open. Trails in this area are usually clear of snow earlier than the rest of the park.
Miette Road is known for black bear sightings: if you see one, stay in your car. On the summit, golden-mantled ground squirrels are very bold; guard your lunch. Keep at least 30 m from elk, deer and bighorn sheep, and 100 m from bears, wolves, cougars and coyotes.
