Old Fort Point is a bedrock hill 130 m above the Athabasca River, shaped by glaciers. The loop climbs through the woods and, at km 1.3, tackles a very steep section beside the oldest rock in the park, a Precambrian breccia about 750 million years old.
From the top you see the town of Jasper, Mt. Edith Cavell, The Whistlers, Pyramid Mountain and Lac Beauvert. Parks Canada recommends going up the wide path behind the trail information kiosk rather than the steeper stairs by the cliff.
From town, follow Highway 93A to the Old Fort Point / Lac Beauvert access road, turn left, cross the Athabasca River on the old iron bridge and park in the lot on the right. It's 1.6 km from town.

Spring to fall. It's short and close to town, so it works for a sunset hike.
Elk and bighorn sheep are seen on the slopes near town. Keep at least 30 m from elk, deer and bighorn sheep, and 100 m from bears, wolves, cougars and coyotes.
