The trail first follows a small power line and passes an industrial plant, then winds up a narrow canyon with vertical rock walls that ends at a waterfall. It's 2.1 km each way (4.2 km return), rated intermediate by Alberta Parks.
Alberta Parks lists it for summer and winter: in winter the waterfall freezes and the canyon floor is covered in snow and ice. Groups are limited to 15 people.
Take the Bow Valley Trail (Highway 1A) east of Canmore toward Exshaw, to the Grotto Mountain Pond parking area. You need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to park in Kananaskis.
📍 Grotto Mountain Pond Path, Municipal District of Bighorn, Alberta, Canadá
Summer and winter, according to Alberta Parks. When icy, the canyon floor is very slippery: bring microspikes.
This is bear country: carry bear spray, make noise and check Alberta Parks advisories for Bow Valley Wildland before you go.
