This trail passes the historic foundations and vents of the abandoned Bankhead coal mine, then climbs to a massive glacier-carved cirque on the north face of Cascade Mountain.
It's steep at times, with rutted sections and rugged terrain. Stay on the trail near the old mine structures.
Start at the Upper Bankhead Day-use Area on the Lake Minnewanka Road, about 8.3 km northeast of downtown Banff. Check today's alerts for road work on the Lake Minnewanka Road.

Summer and fall. Avoid the upper section when it's wet or icy.
Bighorn sheep are often seen along the Lake Minnewanka Road, and bears use the area. Keep 30 m from sheep and 100 m from bears, and never feed wildlife.
