About this place
Plaza de Armas is where Pedro de Valdivia laid out the city in 1541, and it is still Santiago's symbolic center. Around it stand the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National History Museum (in the old Royal Court Palace), the Central Post Office building and City Hall.
Under its palm trees you'll find musicians, painters, chess players and plenty of street life. It's the best starting point to explore downtown on foot.
