About this place
Peyto Lake is famous for its turquoise color and its shape, which from above looks like a wolf's head. It's seen from the Bow Summit viewpoint, the highest point of the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper.
From the parking lot, a paved path of about 600 metres leads to the viewing platform (about 30 minutes round trip, according to Parks Canada). It's about 40 km north of Lake Louise, roughly an hour and a half by car from Banff.
You need a Banff National Park pass to visit (CAD 12.25 per adult per day in 2026). In summer the viewpoint gets busy by mid-morning: early or late in the day there are fewer people and better light.
