About this place
Medicine Lake sits beside Maligne Road, on the way to Maligne Lake. In summer, glacier meltwater fills it and sometimes overflows it; in late summer and fall it drains and becomes a mudflat with pools linked by a stream.
According to Parks Canada, the Maligne River enters from the south and drains through sinkholes in the lake bottom, with no visible outflow channel. The water travels through a cave system in the limestone and resurfaces near Maligne Canyon, 16 km downstream: one of the largest known sinking rivers in the Western Hemisphere.
Indigenous peoples named it Medicine because of its seemingly magical powers.
