About this place
According to Parks Canada, Maligne Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, 22 km long. You get there on Maligne Road, 44 km of narrow, winding pavement: plan a full day and stop at Medicine Lake on the way.
Spirit Island is 14 km up the lake and has no road or trail access: you can only reach it on the boat cruise or in your own non-motorized craft. Gas motors are never allowed in the park.
The Mary Schäffer Loop, a walk of about 3 km along the shore, starts at the first parking lot at the lake. Moose and Harlequin Ducks are seen at the north end of the lake.
