The Laguna de Batuco Nature Sanctuary, in Lampa, about 40 to 50 minutes north of Santiago, is the Santiago region's most important wetland: it's home to over 140 bird species, about 30% of Chile's birds. The area with visitor facilities is managed by the Fundación San Carlos de Maipo.
It has wooden boardwalks and flat, easy trails suited to families and people with reduced mobility, plus a short trail through an espino forest, viewpoints and a bird-watching tower. There's a small café, a rest area and toilets.
Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Entry and parking are free.
Rules: no pets or drones; keep quiet and stay on the boardwalks (walking off them destroys ground nests).
Getting there: Route 5 North, exit Batuco / Liray; then Camino Batuco, Av. España and Av. Italia, following the signs. The last 2 km are dirt road. On Waze or Google Maps, search "Sendero Humedal de Batuco".
