About this place
The Fairmont Banff Springs opened in 1888, built by the Canadian Pacific Railway to draw rail travellers to the Rockies. Its castle-like Scottish baronial architecture earned it the nickname "the Castle in the Rockies", and it's now a National Historic Site of Canada.
You don't need to stay there to visit: its lobbies, shops, restaurants and terraces are open to the public. The classic photo of the hotel is taken from the Surprise Corner viewpoint across the river, and its golf course sits beside Bow Falls.
