The neoclassical National Congress palace was begun in the mid-19th century and housed Parliament until 1973. Since 1990 Congress has met in Valparaíso, but the building remains linked to Parliament.

Its columns and its garden of fountains and trees, together with the Palace of the Courts, make one of downtown's most elegant corners, a block from Plaza de Armas.
