About this place
Before the Spanish arrived it was called Huelén, and at its foot Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago in 1541. In 1872 the city's intendant, Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, turned it into a public park, with the Neptune Terrace, its fountains and stairways, and Hidalgo Castle.
The upper terraces look over downtown Santiago and, on clear days, the Andes. The climb is short but the stairs are steep.
