About this place

The classic walk through Santiago's founding center. It starts at Plaza de Armas, with the Cathedral, the National History Museum and the Central Post Office; continues along Catedral street to the former National Congress and the Courts, and along Bandera to the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art.

From there, the pedestrian streets Ahumada or Huérfanos lead to La Moneda Palace, Plaza de la Constitución and the La Moneda Cultural Center. On the way back you can head north to the Central Market and Estación Mapocho by the river. About 2.5 km.

Getting there: Plaza de Armas Metro station (Lines 3 and 5). To finish, La Moneda station (Line 1) is next to the palace, and Puente Cal y Canto (Lines 2 and 3) is near the Central Market.

When to go: Year-round. On weekdays downtown is livelier (and more crowded); Sundays are quieter, but some places close.

Tips: The Ahumada and Huérfanos pedestrian streets are very crowded. As in any big-city center, keep your phone and wallet put away and wear your backpack in front in crowded areas.
