About this place
The Canmore Hoodoos are tall, slender pillars rising from the hillside above the town cemetery. They formed from glacial till, a mix of mud, sand and stones left by the glaciers at the end of the last ice age. A harder cap on top shields each pillar while rain and wind wear away the ground around it.
You reach them on the Canmore Hoodoos Trail, about 3 km return with roughly 150 m of elevation gain, which takes 1 to 1.5 hours. From the top there's a great view over the Bow Valley, the Three Sisters and the peaks around Canmore. It's family friendly and dogs are welcome on leash; the best time is May to October.
Don't climb on or touch the hoodoos: they're fragile and any knock speeds up their erosion.
