Where

Dieciocho 45, junto a la Alameda, Santiago

About this place

In the late 19th century Dieciocho was Santiago's elegant street, where the wealthiest families built their mansions. It was declared a heritage zone in 1983 and is now part of the university district.

The walk heads south from the Alameda along Dieciocho, past French-inspired façades, and ends at Palacio Cousiño, the street's most famous mansion. About 1.5 km round trip.

Getting there: Los Héroes Metro station (Lines 1 and 2), on the Alameda, steps from Dieciocho. Toesca station (Line 2) is near Palacio Cousiño.

When to go: Year-round, by day. Check Palacio Cousiño's visiting hours if you want to go inside.

Tips: As in any big-city center, keep your phone and wallet put away and wear your backpack in front in crowded areas.
