About this place
One of Santiago's oldest neighborhoods, born in the 1830s and named after the Battle of Yungay. It's a heritage zone thanks to its continuous façades, colorful houses and neighborhood life.
The walk centers on Plaza Yungay, with the Roto Chileno monument and the San Saturnino church, and continues along streets with murals, corner shops and the traditional Peluquería Francesa. To the west, on Avenida Matucana, are the Santiago Library and the Museum of Memory. About 2.5 km.
Getting there: Cumming or Quinta Normal Metro stations (Line 5). From Quinta Normal, Avenida Matucana is a few minutes' walk.
When to go: Year-round, by day. Every January 20, Plaza Yungay celebrates the Día del Roto Chileno.
Tips: It's a residential neighborhood of small businesses: shops and workshops close early on Sundays. As in any big-city center, keep your phone and wallet put away and wear your backpack in front in crowded areas.
