About this place
Wide, tree-lined Avenida República is flanked by early-20th-century mansions now home to universities and institutes, giving the area its student feel.
The walk heads south along República from the Alameda. At number 475 is the Salvador Allende Solidarity Museum, with an art collection donated by artists from around the world. At the far end of the avenue stands the Santiago Club Hípico racecourse. About 1.5 km.
Getting there: República Metro station (Line 1), on the Alameda, right where the avenue begins.
When to go: Year-round, by day. During the academic year the area is busier.
Tips: As in any big-city center, keep your phone and wallet put away and wear your backpack in front in crowded areas.
